7 Things to do in Boerne Texas

Main Plaza 8/22/22

School has started back up and you are wondering what to do with your precious free time. With so many things fun things to do in Boerne, Texas, we had to narrow it down to our 7 favorites. From exploring caves to solving puzzles in cave themed escape rooms, here are our favorite activities in the San Antonio/Boerne area.

Boerne Caves

8 flights of stairs down into Boerne’s own Cave Without A Name - as you step down into the earth you can experience the stunning beauty of the wonders that is cave pools, stalactites, stalagmites, and cave bacon. The massive chambers and amazing tour guides at CWAN help you appreciate what lies beneath. All their tours and attractions are currently open, but you must call or email to get booked for a tour.

Not one but two caves are local to Boerne. There is also Cascade Caverns which is a biologically, geologically, and historically important limestone cave. It has been a show cave with public since 1932. Both caves have one-hour tours, but Cascade Caverns offers an additional 2.5-hour aquifer tour for 10 people at $100 each. If you are really into caving this should not be missed.

Park near a park

Boerne has ten amazing parks, but we are just going to touch on a couple. Our three year old is asking nearly every day “can we go to the park” and with so many to choose from it’s hard to say no. Right in the heart of downtown you have the Historic Main Plaza, a site for weekend festivals, shade trees, and the Trail Head for the Cibolo Trail. Looking for more of a park by the lake? Boerne City Lake Park is located a mile out of town - you can find a covered playground, so much open space, and a full 18-hole disc golf course. But if you plan to fish, make sure your fishing license is up to date. You wouldn’t want to run afoul of the game warden!

And best for last, just outside the hustle and bustle of downtown is a fenced-in playground park. With shade, slides, a rock-climbing wall, and lots of space you will quickly understand why Kinderpark is the favorite in our family.

Boerne Escape Rooms

Fairy Kingdom is ideal for ages 3-8 and contains simple to challenging puzzle concepts tucked into a storybook premise that is fun for boys and girls.

Live off the Land

If you have a Saturday where you aren’t doing an escape room, then you should, but if still no, then I highly encourage you to visit the Farmers Market year round you can visit from 9am to 1pm and buy directly from local growers, crafters and farmers who work some of the historic German farmsteads in Texas Hill Country. If you have already dipped into a cave, then be sure to look at the limestone Herff House. Check their calendar for gardening and homesteading workshops, festivals, and wellness classes.

Cache in on Geocaching

If you are trying to see neat spots around town, I cannot recommend Geocaching enough. It is a citywide treasure hunt, the barrier to enter is having a smart phone and an app. Such as Groundspeak, C:Geo, and Cachly. To learn more about Geocaching check out this handy tutorial, and then get out there and explore.

I also recommend checking the city’s Parks and Rec site as they sometimes host Geocaching Events!

Brewery: Tours, Toasts, and Crawls

If you’re in the earlier parts of adulthood (ages 21-30) and have the stamina to drink at 5 different places and then Lyft home, this is for you. Boerne is home to unique breweries. Starting on River Road you can visit The Dodging Duck Brewhaus - a country style brewpub with comfort food and a view of the duckpond. Then walk a quick block and a half to Cibolo Creek Brewing Co. - a Casual atmosphere will greet you and a serious beer will meet you at this locally sourced and family-owned establishment.

Roam a half block up Main St. and you will spot Free Roam Brewing Company co-founded by the three-time champion San Francisco Giants reliever Jeremy Affeldt. He and two good friends worked their way up from bartender to eventually coming to Boerne to own their own brew pub. Now keep it moving up Main Street to Tusculum Brewing Company ran by a couple of Boerne natives and others that got here as soon as they could. They are housed in the historic H.O. Adler building and have companied degrees in Geology, Engineering, Geography and Chemistry to bring to bear on their delicious craft brews.

Now you cannot just walk to this one, but while you are in town, stop by Barrelman Brewing Company. This nano brewery is family owned and operated with a background in engineering and pediatric ER these two bring a passion for beer and love for their community.

You see ‘em, Museum

Explore the past with amazing historic finds get on the right track by stopping into the Boerne Visitors Center to get a copy of the DIY walking tour of over one hundred properties of historic significance! Maybe mix this in with the pub crawl and see who remembers what the next day. If history is your thing, you should make special note of the Old Jail Museum if you think you have what it takes to break out of this jail, then maybe you should put those skills to the test at the Escape Room.
